You can reduce your charge of 3031 a lot, get excellent performance and a lot more loads from a pound of powder.Īs for Unique in a 45-70 case. This load pretty much copies blackpowder velocities. will completely penetrate through a mature buffalo at 165 yards using a Pedersoli Rolling Block. I can tell you from first hand experience (I have the hide in my mancave) that a 405 cast lead bullet loaded with 30 +/- fps. Accuracy is more important than power, and, since all I will use it on is 100 or so yards on whitetail deer, either would work - as long as it's safe.ġ600 fps. As you can see, I can get quite a few more shots out of Unique than I can from 3031, even though the velocity is slower with the Unique (15.0 grains Unique: 1200FPS, 46.5 3031:1600FPS). Accuracy is more important than power, and, since all I will use it on is 100 or so yards on whitetail deer, either would work - as long as it's safe. The Pedersoli manual says nothing above 29000 CUP, and that load is below that, but I want to cover all of my bases. There is one load that, in the marlin, shot really well and used a lot less powder, but it was just above Trapdoor pressures (around 27000 CUP). I intend to continue using them however, I want to know just what pressures the action can take safely. I am currently loading mid-range Trapdoor loads, and like them just fine. I'm seeing that Trapdoor loads are about as much as I can load in it, but not Level 2 loads. I am not going to use it much for long-range competition, but intend to do quite a bit of hunting. I much prefer this gun over the Marlin, as it fits me perfectly. Its not as fast as my Dillon, but its more fun.I just traded my Marlin 1895 (JM stamped)45/70 for a Pedersoli Creedmore Long-Range rolling block in 45/70. I made a brass powder dipper from a cut down 9mm case with a wire handle that works great. The Lee case length gage in M-1 carbine will drop in as a replacement decapper, as it is often lost. I found an Original Winchester "nut cracker" tool in 32-20 WCF, on Ebay, that turns out neck sized rounds faster that a single stage press. Opened the rear sight to the left and it now prints dead on. I then filed to front sight with try and error by about half. shrank the best groups to about an inch at 50 ft. (Size of 22 Single Six) The fit & finish outstanding, no cyl locking bolt drag line after 300 rounds: Problem with 115 gr blts sized. ![]()
